10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Moving to Belgrade

15 May 2026

Belgrade surprises you. First-timers often expect a cheap city with a few sights and instead discover a vibrant, cosmopolitan metropolis with world-class food, a thriving arts scene, and a genuinely European feel.

Here are my ten key lessons from year one:

  1. Finding a good apartment takes longer than expected. Quality flats in Vračar or Dedinje move fast, allow 4–6 weeks.
  2. You need a Serbian tax number (PIB) for almost everything. Bank accounts, phone contracts, and more.
  3. The kafić culture is a work model. Meetings often happen over coffee. That's not wasted time, it's networking.
  4. Serbian is harder than it sounds. Cyrillic and Latin scripts in parallel, Slavic grammar. Patience pays off.
  5. Healthcare: go private. Private clinics are affordable and professional.
