What sets Serbia apart from any other European location is its unique position in trade policy. No other country on the European continent has preferential market access to both the European Union and China at the same time. Add to that free-trade agreements with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein via EFTA, with Turkey, with the entire Western Balkans via CEFTA, with the Eurasian Economic Union, and new agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

What this means for you: if you produce in Serbia or anchor your corporate structure there, you export duty-free to the EU, China and the Middle East, all from a single location. This combination exists nowhere else in Europe.

It may come as a surprise, but Serbia levies only 15% corporate tax, with no trade tax. For software and IP-intensive companies, the IP-box regime applies an effective rate of just 3% on qualifying licensing income. Research and development costs can be claimed at double their value for tax purposes.

Those who invest substantially and create jobs can additionally be fully exempted from corporate tax for up to ten years. The Serbian state subsidises job creation directly and in cash. This is complemented by 15 active free economic zones and, from 2026, accession to the European SEPA payment area.

Serbia has an exceptional pool of well-educated professionals. Engineers, IT specialists, lawyers, accountants. The quality of education is high, language skills (English and often German) are solid, and wage levels are far below the Western European average. Total employer labour costs start at the statutory minimum wage of around 800 euros per month. That is a fraction of what comparable profiles would cost in Zurich, Vienna or Munich.

No wonder Serbia ranked first in Europe in the EY European Attractiveness Survey 2023, measured by the number of new jobs created per investment project.

A location is only as good as the life it makes possible. And here Serbia surprises again and again. Belgrade is a city you grow to love: grilled meats, fresh wines from Vojvodina, a coffee-house culture in which time moves at a different pace. Prices for food, housing and leisure are far below what you know from Western Europe. And without compromise.

Everyday safety is high. Families I have accompanied describe the sense of security in the major cities as relaxed and pleasant. Add national parks, river landscapes, wine regions and ski resorts, often within easy reach. And the "srpska gostoljubivost", Serbian hospitality, is no tourist backdrop. It is genuine.
