The answer matters more than you'd think. Trying to open a bank account without a tax number (PIB) just wastes time. Here is the proven sequence:
- Register your address within 24 hours of arrival (your landlord or hotel can assist)
- Temporary residence permit at the MUP (Ministry of Interior), waiting time: 2–6 weeks
- Tax number (PIB) at the Tax Administration, needed for everything else
- Bank account: possible with PIB and valid passport
- SIM card with contract: essential for two-factor authentication in banking
A common mistake: without a registered address, some steps cannot be completed. Sort out your rental agreement first.
